Kaet: Duskwood

(You can read all of Kaet’s adventures by checking out the series Table of Contents at the end of this post.)

So I’ve been much happier with Kaet since I upgraded my equipment and skills. It’s just amazing to me what a difference it makes. I’m taking on a lot of orange creatures and although I have to be a little careful about aggro when I am using Frore (the crab I am not necessarily keeping leveled), I do pretty well. And Tibri, the crab I’ve been concentrating on keeping up with me, is an amazing tanking machine. I never have trouble with her losing aggro.

Honestly, though, a big part of the difference is that since I spent all that money I figure I’d better actually pay attention, and so I am being a lot more attentive in combat also. Not necessarily smarter — I’m still not a good hunter — but I am tabbing out to read webpages less during combat at least. *grin*

And I am really liking Duskwood. Well, I don’t much like the layout — you can’t go through the middle of the zone, and going around always seems to involve a really long boring run, or enemies above your level, especially in the beginning. But I enjoy killing undead and I’ve always liked the undead/Scourge lore. (Although I am only partway through it, I am most enthralled with Abercrombie’s tale.) And for some reason there are chests scattered randomly everywhere in the zone, plus copious ores and herbs. So there’s a lot to look at!

But it’s a good thing I can handle orange enemies now, because I keep running out of yellow quests. In fact, I suspect a number of the quests are mis-labeled (or just not put together very well). For example, the Totem of Infliction quest requires venom from level 18+ spiders, fingers from level 20+ skeletons, and fangs from level 24+ ghouls. I was carrying around the venom and fingers for a long time before I ever saw a fang.

On the other hand, I’ve killed half the Plague Spreaders I need for the final step of The Night Watch quest, and it’s still red to me! But I suspect that if I weren’t currently able to take on oranges, I’d really hate this zone.

Last night I hit level 25, which meant that today it was time to go learn Claw 4. (Claw 4 requires pet level 24, but doesn’t occur on a wild creature until level 25.) I didn’t realize it, but all the creatures that know Claw 4 when they are tamed are on Kalimdor, where Kaet hasn’t done much exploring yet. So I took a boat to Ratchet and made the run up to Ashenvale to tame an Elder Ashenvale Bear. It was an uneventful trip all around.

Level 25 also meant I could buy Razor Arrows, so I stocked up on those and headed back out to kill more undead. Everything goes better with zombies!

[ ... later ... ]

I wrote most of the above before I left on my big move, but I didn’t have time to edit it and get it posted before I went. This explains why, if you check Kaet out on the Armory, you will find that she’s now level 28. I’ll fill in the missing bits as soon as I can!

You’re probably close enough in level to do my favorite quest line in the game. You should do the quests to find out Jitters story first, but it starts here:

Unfortunately, it just kind of ends. I heard reports that it was supposed to lead the Alliance to SFK eventually, but with the death knights involved, maybe we’ll get some answers in WotLK.

If you think trotting up and down in Duskwood is annoying, wait a few levels until you’re Alliance in STV with only one flight point :P It’s easier in a sense to get to Raven Hill by flying to Westfall and cutting overland east. It takes more actual time due to the in-air part, but less autorunning.

But yeah, Duskwood is great fun (and XP up the wazoo) with neat quest chains and alllllll the zombies, especially the cute balding ones with the wild side-to-side look animation and the long floppy hands. I always feel kind of sorry for those — too bad you can’t tame a zombie pet.

@Mania: if you want a pet to keep aggro, try a boar! Been leveling one since early 50 or 51, am now 59 and won’t look back! Whenever the charge is not resisted, pop goes 3~4 K of threat! And being BM, that leaves a nice Intimidation to use on a 2nd target, plus a freezing trap on a 3rd (and even 4th with prep if needed!)… Unless they later allow other pets to learn charge, or unless they seriously nerf it, this will be my pet till 70!

@Arides: Duskwood is bad with 1 FP? Try STV! At least you can use the Westfall trick for Duskwood, but in STV it’s much worse…

If only blizz would add a few more FPs to old level zones to help leveling those for outlands… They’re adding a bunch more graveyards, but that doesn’t help as much, even if that’s just around the corner in 2.2.2! :)

@someone’s @Mania is making a character for each pet family. Kaet gets crabs. There’s evidently a NE to be created soon for boars:

@someone’s @Arides I hate STV with a passion usually reserved by the Horde towards NE hunters. Of course maybe being a NE hunter in STV was my problem. My second 60 (a warrior) didn’t set foot there until the Armorsmithing quests, and then she was 50+. I my zone progression was something like hillsbrad, ashenvale, 1k needles raceway, arathi highlands, desolace, swamp of sorrows, badlands, and then started on some of the level 40+ zones early. It did turn into a bit of a struggle not to grind later to get to 60, but if you could run a few instances instead, it’s more than possible. Especially with Outland at 58 now.

There are a ton of places that could really use a new FP. But then there’s a lot they could do to improve the old world. Jame’s guides are extremely useful for making them seem like BC.

@znodis: thks! I kind of missed the point as it was so long ago! :)

@mania: “When I am taming pets for myself, I tend to look for pets that require a lot of work to tame”

If I were you, and even though I believe they probably won’t fix the graveyard ressing soon, I’d rather create all the chars, level them to 10, finish the taming quest and then go tame their selected pets while you can use the graveyard “bug”! :)

A nice bonus to this way is that when you finally get to play them for real you’ll have plenty of rest bonus. Also, you can be switching back and forth between hunters/pets/quests/zones, and seeing you’re an alt-aholic, I’d think this would make your play more interesting!

I’ve been leveling 3 alts simultaneously and it’s great. Not only does the rested exp grow better, but I remember exactly how to do all of the quests and what order is best after the first one goes through. I think it would be way too boring though, if they were all hunters. Pushing the same buttons to kill the same mobs over and over.

  7. Mania - September 29th, 2007 @ 9:08 am EDT

I tried leveling several characters simultaneously, but I get lost too easily. I forget what each one was doing and end up wandering disconsolate in the wilderness. (Anyway, although I only write about Kaet I do still ocassionally play my main, Mania herself, and every so often I’ll do a quest with one of the others, just for fun.)

I have a total of 4 toons now (5 if you count my banker). My main, who is at 70. My Blood Elf Hunter is forever at 29, and exists only to have fun (and to pwn my 20-29 guildies on the Alliance side when they dare step into the same BG as me. LOL) I have a Gnome Rogue (15) that I plan on twinking at 19, simply because rogues RULE the 19 BG’s. Last, I have my Draenei Priestess who I really want to level to 70.

I was thinking last night that I have yet to play a toon that can wear armor above leather. Granted, my hunter would eventually be able to wear mail, but that’s not until level 40. Then I have a druid, rogue and a priest. LOL - So, I made my banker last night and I made him a Human Warrior (easy to get him to Stormwind), and to F-around, I leveled him to level 5. Suffice to say, he was FUN…. so, now I want a Fury Warrior. LOL

Anyway… if you want to level multiple toons (and you don’t care about old world rep), sit them in an Inn, where they will earn 1.5% rest time each day and once in a while, get on and grind with them. I think you can have as much as 3 full levels of rest time. Oh, and if you make them a skinner, grinding is lucrative as well.
