Petopia: Skills Pages

I’ve made some modifications to the way the Big List of Pet Skills works. It’s way too late tonight do a comprehensive rundown — for which I apologize, but between fighting with the Perl script for-freakin’-ever today and then pausing that to try (unsuccessfully) to hunt down my husband’s escaped hamster, I’m tired! — but give it a quick look and let me know what you think of it or if you see anything wonky or wrong. Although all the old info should still be available (in fact  left the Big List itself mostly intact for backwards-compatibility), I do plan on taking some time this weekend to add notes to the individual skill pages — which skills scale and how, which cooldown timers overlap, etc. So I wouldn’t exactly call this finished yet, but I wanted to get what I had up for feedback.

Hamsters can be slippery little buggers. I know because we once spent 3 hours looking for my brother’s furry little escape artist. I was lucky enough to glance over my shoulder to see him sneaking around a room I had just thoroughly searched. They’re smarter than they look.

Anyways, I like the changes you made to the page, especially the quick reference. I just have one suggestion. It’s a reeeeeally long page and some “Back to Top” links would be helpful. Or a script like this.

Yep, nice work but it still is a huuuuge page! :)

I like pages shorter, especial reference/information pages. Perhaps splitting that info between several pages? Or even using a bit of javascript to fold/unfold sections? Just a few thoughts!

BTW, if you need a hand on Perl, let me know: I’ve worked quite a bit on it and, even though until yesterday it was like 2 years since I last used it, I eventually gave up on trying to do something in VBA and wrote a few simple perl scripts instead, so I un-rusted it a bit now! :)

Hmm .. I really should have just stayed up a bit longer to give you guys the rundown on what I did. Although this has been valuable feedback — apparently it’s not very clear what I did! :>

I left the Big List page more or less as it was for now, but all of the links now go to seperate skill pages. Examples: Bite, Poison Spit.

My thought was to sooner or later remove the unreadably long list at the bottom of the Big List page (leaving the tables and indices at the top of the page) — but I thought it might be a good idea to leave it there for now for backwards-compatibility. As my husband says, though, the fact that there is more page there just begs you to scroll down instead of click. So maybe that was a bad idea.

I’m working now on a notes section for the individual skill pages — what the skill is good for or how it interacts with other skills and such. That may or may not make it up before I start my cross-country drive later this week. But at least the skill list *is* updated now — it was getting crufty.

    Forgot to mention …

shibumi: Yes, but then you have a snake loose in the house, and snakes are much harder to trick into being caught again. Believe me, I’ve tried. :>

Once when I was home from college my mother was playing with my red-tailed boa, and he snuck off into the back of the couch when she went to answer the phone. She was terrified he’d be hurt and I’d be angry, so she cut the couch open with an Xacto knife (carefully) and pulled out all the stuffing until she found him.

Someone: Thanks for the offer. I know Perl reasonably well, but I’m working with the SQL cra .. err .. code my husband wrote for me and his coding style is, shall we say, eccentric. (I’m using the Template Toolkit 2 to generate most of my pages from the database on my end to cut down on database hits. The TT2 stuff is actually quite cool.)

Okay — I’ve made some additional changes to the Big List and added notes to all the passive skills that need them and about half the active skills. Lemme know what you think.

Much nicer and yes, I did miss that clicking the links would go to a new page! Since I saw it all there, I wrongfully assumed they were in-page links! :)

BTW: Minor typo in “Great Stamina” page: cjheck
