Petopia: All Sorts of Updates!
I’m trying to squeeze in a lot of work on Petopia this week since next week and the week after will largely be taken up with a cross-country move. Last night I added a bunch more untameable creatures and extended the cross-through font to untameables in the database search results so that when you have untameables mixed in with tameables creatures in those results it’s easier to see which is which.
I also put the family damage, armor, and health modifiers back on the family and individual pet pages — no matter how much I think they aren’t useful anymore, too many people wanted to see them there. Petopia isn’t just for my private research, after all – it’s supposed to be useful for the readers!
Then today I posted the article on Surviving the First Nine Levels (which I debuted here two weeks ago) up on Petopia, in a new section called Tips and Tricks. (And thanks to everyone who commented or sent me feedback to help refine that article!) I also moved the Taming Guides into that section because I wasn’t happy with them in the Resources area, which I persist in thinking of as ‘Links’. In addition, there’s a new taming video from a hunter named Fengor, on solo taming the Soulflayer. It’s been sitting in my inbox for much too long. (Unfortunately I still need to go through the Taming Guides and make sure they are reasonably up-to-date. So much to do!)
Since I was doing that, I pulled the pet calculators out into a new section called, appropriately, Pet Skill Calculators and (finally) included a link to Lassirra’s calculator on The Hunter’s Mark. Speaking of which, Draketh’s very popular Visual Pet Skill Calculator has been updated. It’s jumped the gun a little on Patch 2.2 — since it now lists raptors as being able to learn Dash — but more importantly the level required display now takes into account the level the pet needs to be to learn skills, not just the level the pet needs to be to have earned enough training points.
Incidentally, I’m aware that Petopia is having some intermittent issues serving pictures promptly. I’ve also lost the ability to get to Petopia a few times in the past few days, for a few hours at a time, but friends in Florida aren’t having that trouble so it may be a regional thing. I’d blame the shaky SoCal power grid if I could, but that seems a bit far-featched. :> Regardless, I’m looking into it.

I noticed one of the changes: the red coloring of the minus attributes! Makes them easier to spot! And while you are at it, why not center or even right-justify that data? Left-justify doesn’t work that good in there! (Family modifiers).
I couldn’t find anywhere on the petopia page where people have the option of suggesting something.. so thought maybe I’d make it here.
I have an idea for a pet talent calculator, but not sure how to actually do it.
My idea was this.. a list by the HUNTER’s level.. basically, plug in the level you want to look up, and it’ll tell you up to what rank of pet skills you can learn, and what creatures can teach it (that rank), up to that level
Tiygrea’s idea is good – just a couple days ago there was a level 33 hunter in the Undercity complaining in the trade channel he wanted to learn prowl. The person griped they had been to petopia and couldn’t figure out what and where to tame it. A quick alt-tab visit to petopia later I told him he could tame a mountain lion in Alterac Mountains. Person didn’t know where alterac mountains were. At this point I’m starting to understand where the stereotype “huntard” comes from. I was on my 60 warlock at the time and get a whisper from the guy asking me to join his guild – “You could be the guildmaster”. I politely declined and went about my business while there were more questions from the person on trade about the best way to get to Alterac. I shoulda went down to Alterac to see what happened when he met one of the big ogres – just for grins you know.
Oh yeah, I agree with Someone – the minus attribute coloring is nice [grin]. Right justification would be OK, but with the % in there it might not help that much. I wouldn’t take the % out either, it would lead to lots of confusion and questions.
Good luck with the move, hope all goes well!
Dont forget the Dash/Charge shared cooldown update :D
I’ve just centered the family mods data (as well as other tables that use the same style) — I think I like it centered better than right-justified, but you can tell me what you think. :>
Tiygrea: You are welcome to post here, as you did, or e-mail me at mania@maniasarcania.com anytime you have a suggestion.
A calculator for skills based on the hunter’s level would be nice and if someone (not neccesarily Someone) wants to build one I would be more than happy to host it. :> But next I am working on getting the skills section cleaned up and more useful, and I thought as part of that I might database-ify skills, including the lowest level you can actually learn them at as well as the pet level they require. We’ll have to see how well that works out — I may just autogenerate a table instead of exposing the database since it wouldn’t change often and I worry about performance already, but … we’ll see.
Anyway, skills are up next, and no I haven’t forgotten the Dash/Charge cooldown, Galwar. *grin*
Petopia drops more updates | Warcraft-News.com - September 5th, 2007 @ 11:30 am UTC
[...] posted a ton of updates for Petopia– and all done while planning a cross-country move! Doesn’t that girl ever [...]
lol im in FL and i had problems, so its like an internet thing i guess. good job on the updates mania!
I said it before and i’ll say it again /cheer
Discovered your website recently through WoW Insider and Big Red Kitty. Love it and love the updates!
A couple of other untameable beasts. The windsaber trainer has a pet cat. Its not tameable by alliance but I don’t know about horde as I have no hunter high enough to try.
Also in WPL Huntsman Radley has a pet wolf that can’t be tamed.
Centered looks fine (although perhaps the left-most column with the family names would be easier to read Left-justified!).
As for someone making that calculator, it surely won’t be Someone, at least for now! Check my blog: got a shinny new add-on and spreadsheet there and instructions on how to use, even it currently only has info on a dozen or so pets. I’ll be busy ‘Taming the whole WoW‘! :)
Other NPC pets, likely untrainable – much less able to try: there’s a Dog next to the Weapon Master in Orgrimmar … :)
To be fair, you can Beast Lore any mob labeled a beast, whether it’s friendly or not to you… so anyone should be able to check what’s tameable and what’s not. *grin* On that note the kitty by the wintersaber trainer IS untameable, even as Horde.
To Mania, continued thanks for doing such a good job! I’d comment on the site’s layout but frankly I can tolerate nearly anything that isn’t too crammed together, so as far as I can tell the site is very nicely laid out.
Thanks for Petopia.
Q: Anybody knows how long does it take to get my pet on next loyalty level if keeping it still happy?
SB@L, if you scroll back along in this blog, Mania’s done a bit of loyalty research that there are full notes on somewhere around here…
got it here
Does anyone know what happened to Ennui, the armored boar from Razorfen Kraul? I noticed the absence on Petopia and was about ready to go tame him. Will I still find this named there or has it been removed from the world?
SB@L: I also just posted a new article on this, here: Loyalty Gain: Time and Experience
Baluka: I don’t think I’m familiar with Ennui, and I’m not finding anything under that name on the sites I usually check. Can you tell me more about this creature?
