PTR 2.2.0: Scorpid Poison Changes

Bulldazhor was kind enough to let us know that this latest update to the PTR has also included some changes to the scorpid skill Scorpid Poison:

  1. Scorpid Poison Rank 5 now does 55 damage over 10 seconds (instead of 44 damage over 8 seconds). This will make it easier to keep Scorpid Poison stacked when using Rank 5.
  2. However, fewer hunters will be interested in keeping Scorpid Poison stacked since its damage no longer seems to scale with hunter RAP to the same extent that it did before.

In other words, it looks like the days of using the Scorpid Poison stacking trick to inflict massive amounts of damage in a long fight are over … or will be when Patch 2.2 goes live, anyway.

Now if they would only come up with special abilities for some of the unloved pet families, such as crabs, spiders and tallstriders…

So they make rank 5 better, and also make the whole thing bad… Boy, Tucker is gonna be one mad scorpion…

AHAHAHAHAHAHA Shows those stupid exploiters! Ravagers will still reign as the best dps pets! Muahahahahahahahahahaha

    lol…..that was slightly overboard….but really….Scorpid=Tank Scorpid=/=DPS…

Also…mania…if you see this….I had an idea for another search type. “Search by Diet” I know that I have an issue with pets not eating meat, because I have a macro that feeds my Ravager Smoked Talbuk Venison, so I try and pick pets based on them being able to eat meat to an extent..

may be off topic, but i just found out something interesting about pet loyalty, i tamed and leveled up 2 pets lv 69, and realized their loyalty went up exactly when they complete one of their experience bars, btw they have 6 bars, and both got leveled 6 loyalty when they got to 70, weird isn’t it?

You know, I myself had been considering this change as rather a min/max-raider issue only, not something that affects people like me who don’t raid. (I wouldn’t classify the SP stacking trick as an exploit, but it’s way too much trouble for me to bother using. *grin*)

But then yesterday I compared just the simple, normal damage of SP5 on the PTR to SP5 on live, using two newly-tamed (and still unhappy) Scorchshell Pincers on identical characters (my main and a copy of my main). On the PTR, just plain old SP5 with no special setup or anything is only doing about 43% of the damage that it is doing on live.

This makes me very sad for non-raiders who have been happily using scorpids because they like the looks and who are about to get nerfed hard. It also makes me sad that I didn’t do more research on Scorpid Poison scaling when I had the chance.

Kijik: You can already use the Diet drop-down in the Pet Database to limit your search to pets who can eat meat. At some point in the future I want to clean that up a bit to make it easier to use, though.

Ryufuujin: Hmm .. that would make sense if the pet’s expereince bar is linked to the hunter’s experience for this level, I think. Thanks for bringing that up!

Hello Mania, this is first time i post here… But i am realy confused, because i dont know how is it about training new pet. Example: i catch a new pet, and i would like to train him Natural Armor. Is it better to train him first rank 1, then rank 2, and rank 3, or just rank 3? how is it about training points? can i save some point, using one of this ways? or is better to teach him all ranks, because he get more armor? Is it same with Great stamina? i dont know, and thats why i ask you… Thanks for answer.

PS: sorry for my bad english, but i am not english man… Thanks for patience

If you tame Rank 3, this includes Ranks 1 and 2, and it uses the same amount of training points. You do not gain more armor or save any training points from going 1 to 2 to 3, or just 3. Hope that helps.

  9. Beran - August 19th, 2007 @ 3:13 pm EDT

yas, that helps so much, but:
Rank 1: (1 TP). Increases Armor by 50.
Rank 2: (5 TP). Increases Armor by 100.
Rank 3: (10 TP). Increases Armor by 160.
this makes me confused… so if i teach my pet all three ranks, it take 16 points, and add only 160 armor, same as only rank 3, which costs 6 points less, only 10 points? so if i have pet from lvl 10, i spend much points for nothing? it seems that i teach my pet rank 1, it adds +50 armor, rank 2 adds +50 armor once again, so it is +100 armor, as same if i teach my pet only rank 2, and rank 3 adds +60 armor, so at the final i have +160 armor, as same as rank 3 only… is it that?

When you upgrade from one Rank to another Rank you only pay the difference in training Points to the already known Rank.

Upgrade from Rank 0 to Rank 3: 10 Points
Upgrade from Rank 1 to Rank 3: 9 Points (but you have already spent 1 for Rank 1)
Upgrade from Rank 2 to Rank 3: 5 Points (but you have already spent 5 Points for Rank 2, or 1 Point for Rank 1 and 4 Points for upgrading to Rank 2)

If you compare that - its always 10 points for having Rank 3 - whichever way you chose to train.

Maybe an easy way to grasp this is by saying, whenever you teach your pet an new Rank of any given skill, you get all points refunded you previously spent for a lower rank of that same ability.

oh, i can see clearly now, the rain is gone

:-) thanks, now i understand all, you are all great peoples, now i know what i wanted to know

Excellent! And thank you very much, everyone, for answering Beran’s question while I was away this weekend. You are such a helpful bunch!

Now if they would only come up with special abilities for some of the unloved pet families, such as crabs, spiders and tallstriders…

Yeah. I always thought it was foul that mob spiders can net you but when you tame them, they don’t net. Gaaaaaaaaaaay!

  14. Guitgoin - August 21st, 2007 @ 7:43 am EDT

I totally agree Messyah! Before I found out about Petopia and also before I really learned how to get my pet new abilities, I tried taming a spider in the hopes that they would have a cool ability. But nope, not even a poison ability! What a letdown that was for a very green hunter…

  15. Regolith - August 22nd, 2007 @ 9:37 am EDT

Meh, I knew that they would nerf the scorpids. Even if the only folks really taking advantage of it were the uber raiders with nothing better to do that pop 10 potions and BW and send their pet in… WHY does Blizzard hate hunter pets?! WHY?

And anyway, Rufus and I are STILL waiting for the hyena spell… We know that you can do it, Blizz…. come on…. :)
