Gore-Scythe Ravager: Quest or … What?

This is actually a Rip-Blade Ravager. I neglected to get a good shot of the Gore-Scythe.

When I was checking out my lists of untameable pets recently, I ran across a mention of the Gore-Scythe Ravager. These guys apparently spawn right where the Rip-Blade Ravagers do in Blade’s Edge — which made it very odd that I had never seen one. So I wandered down there to take another look and see if I had missed something.

At first I found nothing out of the ordinary — Rip-Blade Ravagers everywhere and not a Gore-Scythe to be seen. But then, just as I was turning to leave, a horde of Gore-Scythe’s spawned and started attacking Toshley Station!

I quickly verified that these ravagers cannot be tamed (probably because they are heavily scripted to attack the Station). But that leaves me with the question — why do they spawn? Is it part of some Alliance quest? A timed event? Does anyone know what the lore is here?

Being Ally and done with that part of BEM, it’s not a quest I’ve heard of. I believe it’s just a timed event (every so often the Gnomes do some experiment that triggers a wave of attacks).

It’s just a timed event. Half of Toshley’s Station is full of Star Wars references. The other? Starship Troopers, which had a lot of bugs that were not unlike ravagers…

Ah, that makes sense. I had heard that Toshley’s Station had some Starship Troopers references, I just hadn’t connected it with the ravagers.

    Thank you both!

Yep, the attack is great fun for all of us likers of Starship Trooper:

    Quote from WowWiki:
“Every so often ravagers attack the outpost in a scene reminiscent of Starship Troopers. The attack is repelled by an eyepatch-wearing gnome named Razak Ironsides and Razak’s Roughriders, a group of mechanostrider-riding soldiers. This is a reference to “Rasczak’s Roughnecks” and the character Lieutenant Rasczak, played by Michael Ironside in the movie Starship Troopers, based ‘loosely’ on the book Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein. Also, quests are available from Dizzy Dina, based on the character Dizzy Flores played by Dina Meyer.”

It is a timed event and I believe it is Blizzard paying homage to the movie Starship Troopers, like Markus mentioned.

I was at Toshleys in my 70 priest and suddenly noticed all these ravagers coming - and stopped by just to read what all the npcs were saying to each other. I figured since the npcs were fighting the ravagers I wasn’t in much danger, right? Wrong, they kept coming in wave after wave and suddenly turned on me - maybe I was just in the wrong place. Anyhow, couldn’t manage to take 7 at once with another wave behind that. Also because I had to keep reporting the humor of the situation in guildchat - now feel like an idiot for not getting the Troopers reference, duh!
