Bad Hunter DPS

I was reading Big Red Kitty this morning, in his post about balancing stamina and DPS, and although much of the post was over my head, I got very briefly curious about how Mania stacks up in general in terms of damage. (If there’s one thing regular readers should know by now, it’s that I’m a terrible hunter. I know pets, but I really don’t care so much about the rest of the class.)

Mania's DPS: 256.6

Anyway, I was curious how my DPS stacks up against a real hunter, so I logged into my main real quick and grab a screenshot. I was expecting to be somewhat behind the “too much stamina” example that BRK gives, but … no, my DPS actually doesn’t look half bad! Well, it doesn’t look half bad to me. It’s probably still pitiful, but hey, you take pride where you can. (“It’s not as bad as it could be! Yay!”)

Look on the bright side: your base DPS is more than 80% of the base DPS of a ‘leet hunter decked out in epix. Nothing to sneeze at.

Except that the ‘leet hunters decked out in epix’ all know that the paperdoll damage numbers are completely useless for comparing damage, as 2 hunters with the same potential damage can vary widely based on shot rotation, timing, and pet build.

To try out your actual DPS, you can go over to Area 52 and shoot up Dr. Boom, who doesn’t move and has endless HP. (you want to leave your pet back for him, though).

Except that using Dr. Boom to test a Beastmaster’s damage is completely useless for comparing damage. A Beastmaster relies on his or her pet not only for a significant portion of their damage, but also for Ferocious Inspiration.

C’mon, this is just for fun, nothing more. Almost any comparisons of damage are subject to many variables that cannot necessarily be controlled for. That’s why I said “your BASE dps…” Ultimately meaningless, yes, but still fun to compare.

Oh, and Dr. Boom doesn’t have “endless damage.” He has 650,000 hp. For more information on the uselessness of Dr. Boom, check out BRK’s piece: http://bigredkitty.blogspot.com/2007/04/dr-boom-i-presume.html

“so I logged into my main real quick and grab a screenshot”: not really needed these days, unless the Armory is on maintenance… :)

Only a little less than mine, but my gear isn’t too good,:/

Someone: Well … truth is I had no idea where I logged out or what state I was in. I thought I needed to change out of my dress armor (although it turned out that I didn’t). And I was afraid I might have had resurrection sickness. These days, I use my main for random forays to check on pets and I never know where or in what condition I’ll end up.

    Greetings!
I must disagree with your comment that you aren’t a “real hunter”. You sure are! The thing you are hunting, though, isn’t optimized DPS or raid gear, it is all things about pets – and you are superb at it. Petopia is both an essential resource and a fun place to browse for anyone who cares about hunter pets, and your blog (and the great all pet family hunter quest) is both enjoyable and full of little “hmm, I’ll have to try that sometime” bits.
Stand tall, your work merits it.

Doesn’t seem too bad… at 64, I’m still at 168. Then again, that is wearing “dress armour” I’d better double check when the servers are up.

I second Dimo’s post. You are a real hunter and should stand tall. I use Petopia probably once or twice a game session. I can’t imagine not using this invaluable resource of yours and still having a fun to play hunter… oh, wait… I can imagine it… it was my first hunter, the one I hated and don’t play… You and Petopia brought the hunter love back to me. Anyone who tells you you are not a “real” hunter? Send ‘em over to Argent Dawn and I’ll tell ‘em they can kiss my big red baboon butt.

    In “battle dress” it’s 192. =)

Oh, and I very much agree with the people saying you are a True Hunter, and I’d say a True Friend to us other hunters.

Hah! Thanks for supporting me, guys. To be honest though, *I* am usually the person calling myself a bad hunter or not a real hunter. I get a lot of e-mail from people asking me how they should spec their hunter, and I always have to send them off to people who know that better than I do. But I will admit — I know pets pretty well. *grin*
