Wrath of the Lich King Confirmed

Early word from BlizzCon says the next expansion is indeed Wrath of the Lich King. Unfortunately I haven’t seen anything about new races yet. (New races generally mean new newbie areas, which generally means new low level pets, and as you know I’m a sucker for traveling long distances to tame new and weird low level pets.) One source did mention concept art of a Tuskarr hunter, but that could be an NPC. Perhaps as the day wears on we’ll learn more. I’m also anxious to hear about tameable beasts in the content that attendees are supposed to get to play. (Hint: If you are there, and a hunter, use Beast Lore! And send me notes!)

Edit: No new races announced. There is a new class — a hero class, no less — the Death Knight. But it’s apparently unlocked when you hit level 80 and it starts at high levels, so it really doesn’t satisfy my lowbie alt itch. *sigh*

Edit: My last edit on this topic. :> The US WotLK Blizzard site is now available.

  1. Wow, maybe there will be a Beast Master class which will allow hunters to use two pets at once! I won’t get my hopes up, though…

  2. dam, and i thought it was gonna be Emerald dream…but hey northrend is good 2. id love to play a tuskarr hunter. lol.

  3. So sad there’s no new races… I love interesting races, and I’m still hoping for one that’s drastically less humanoid than a minotaur. Something on four legs, preferably. That’s why I play Hunter–I like being able to use all sorts of monsters in combat, even if I can’t play them. If Druids could turn into a raptor or some such instead of a cat, then I’d have a Druid for sure, but I really, really don’t like WoW’s cats–they’re all clunky-looking.

Lack of new classes too… “Hero” class that I am neither interested in nor will be able to acquire if the quest requires a single 5-man dungeon…

All in all, a disappointing expansion for Maahl. Maybe if I’m lucky they’ll add tameable dragons in Dragonblight.

  4. When i got to play the demo this morning, first thing i did was take off running and explored! I had lev 70 grey boars agro me along with black tigers. There was what looked like a dark brownish storm crow model called a something eagle. There was also some multi horned kodo-moose thing that tried to trample me too :p
Thats it for all the animal types that i found there!

  5. Ten more levels… ugh… but I’m glad my guess was right, Northrend should be cool. Will be kinda weird to fight trash mobs that could stomp Ragnaros, though.

  6. In one of the videos I saw on IGN the devs mentions some sort of Tuskarr starting town. So I’m kind of wondering myself.. Maybe they meant it was the starting town for Horde in Northrend?

  7. According to wowwiki, which may or may not be accurate, the Tuskarr are going to be with the Horde but on an NPC basis–like the Mag’har from Outlands. Probably a faction that you can gain rep with, but not a race that you can play as.

They only announced it yesterday, yes, but WoWInsider showed that they did a lot of panelwork talking about the expansion–and there was never so much as a fleeting mention of a new race, whereas with Burning Crusade they made sure to advertise the Blood Elves and Draenie as icons of the expansion. This time they’re focusing on the continent itself, and the regions within, which is good of course–it means the regions will be more thought-out and probably more interesting for it–but also saddening because I was really hoping for the addition of more interesting races.

Tuskarr, Arakkoa, Furbolg, Naga–they’ve got a number of interesting possibilities to choose from, though I admit the Naga would take a bit of lore-tweaking to make it reasonable that there would be a group of them that wasn’t just interested in killing/enslaving whatever they saw. But Blizzard’s made the choice, it would seem.

  8. i also noticed that on the wow website they said a Bestiary would be coming soon, so maybey well have some good info on some tameable creatures! =D

  9. Darkbander: Thanks for the hands-on report! The level 70 boars will be quite welcome — can you imagine the pain of leveling a 60 boar to 80?

  10. The last time Blizzard releaced a Beastiary, it had no clues on what monsters were tameable and what were not. It got my hopes up with the Fen Striders (who wouldn’t want their own Tripod with lazerbeams?), and also with the initial graphic for the Warp Stalkers, which made them look more like feral feline lizards and less like dumpy geckos.

  11. Hello, I’m a hunter, and I was at Blizzcon, and I did get to try Wrath of the Lich King. I was at both the Wrath of the Lich King info and lore panels and I tried to ask a question about new tameable beasts at both, though I didn’t get to since I was too far back in line. It does look like in the new starting area, Howling Fjord, there will be new wolves with compeltely new skins, as it appeared that a few of them that attacked me, were neither the regular wolves nor worg skins. Actually, if I remember correctly, there was a sort of tall, scrawny wolf that looked sort of halfway between a worgen, and a regular wolf (I’m certain that it was a beast and not a humanoid btw, it walked on all fours) Other than that, I wasn’t wandering around long enough to see what other beasts there were (my two friends and I went straight into the instance, and we only were able to play for 20 mins.) Also, sry I wasn’t able to do beast lore, since the sample character that I played was a druid, not a hunter.
