Petopia: Pets with Unique Looks

I’ve added another page to the Special Pets section on Petopia: Pets with Unique Looks. For the purpose of this list I went with the idea that a unique appearance is one that only occurs in the wild on one specific kind of creature. I did fudge in a couple of places when the appearance occurs on multiple creatures but those creatures are rare or otherwise special.  For instance, I included the white lion look, which can be found on both Echeyakee and Sian-Rotam, because both of those are quest-spawned. But I didn’t include the red two-headed carrion bird, even though there are techincally only two examples of that look in the wild, because both examples are quite common around Hellfire Penninsula.

Anyway, let me know what you think!

Well, it’s just my personal suggestion, but I would have included the brilliant green/blue Scorpid skin that is only found in South Barrens. While there are plenty of those Scorpids creeping about the Silithid mounds there, that is the *only* time they appear tameable–and I have never seen a single Hunter using one, likely due to the restricted level of them. They’re a very flashy creature, but both the black and the silver Scorpid skins are much more popular (and more available) so those are the ones most commonly seen.

What about Bjarn and Mangeclaw? If you include the diseased bears you might as well include them–you never see’em nowadays.

I think it would be a good idea to include all quest-spawned creatures and silver rares, because a lot of hunters (especially new players) are simply unaware that many of these creatures exist. Also, creatures with colour schemes that are rare for their level are worth including (like Bjarn, or the red worg in Badlands whose name I don’t recall). I’m at work now, I can’t see what the section looks like ATM, but I will check it out when I get home.

Um, *raises hand* I have one of them there silithids. It matches by eyes.

I really like the new page. There always seems to be a “What’s the rarest pet” topic on any hunter forum. Most discussions quickly turn to 2 types of rare: hard to find/unique pets, and seldom seen pets. For instance, the red crab in durotar is hardly rare, yet the number of hunters with the skin is extremely low especially for alliance. (and that’s the kind of thing they’re usually looking for)

If I may, I suggest changing the name to “Unique and Beautiful Pets.” That gives you the freedom to include really nice looking skins that may be a bit more common, and also exclude skins that may be on only one type of mob, but are common and ugly. *cough* Dire Racoon, Plagued Swine *cough* The list is subjective anyway, why not cater it to your tastes.

Lastly, I notice this awhile ago, but the Naraxis spider skin also seems to be used by Terokkarantula (http://www.wowhead.com/?screenshot=view&1.20682#12367) He came up on my beast lore as tamable back in February, but you were still getting new BC stuff up, so I didn’t think to email.

Anyway, great job and very useful content.

Forgot to add, any plans to add additional WoW database links? I’ve grown to dread any link that goes to thot, and found wowhead to be much more my style.

Terokkarantula is untamable: I just went down to see. I had to check as am training Naraxis at the moment (Level 65 atm), and I don’t want the place flooded with lookalikes :).

My other two pets are my 70 Deviate Dreadfang (Tobias) and a generic two-headed red carrion bird (who is my temporary pet in case of new abilities to learn are released).

Maahl: Good point — I should include creatures that are only available in one place like the green scorpids. There’s some spiders that fit the same mold, I believe. I’ll run through them this afternoon and see what else needs to be added.

BarzahdZ: Bjarne and Mangeclaw aren’t unique or semi-unique skins. But don’t worry — they’ll get a nice big spot on the “Parade of Popular Pets” that I am working on now.

Branan: Spawned and rare creatures have their own lists under Special Pets. I may do a separate page for skins that aren’t common at their level, or more likely I will toss them into the Popular Pets. (There is a note about them at the bottom of the unique page, though.)

Znodis: The Popular Pets page will be a lot more suvjective. By the way, what’s a Dire Raccoon?

I once knew a hunter so ashamed of how horrible his plagued swine looked, he told people it was a dire raccoon. It sticks with me because I think that’s the only way I could justify taming one.

Ahhh! I see. Heh, yes … I can definitely see that. They do have a racoony look about the eyes.

Do you have any idea how offen Old Cliff Jumper spawns and respawns?

  12. Mania - August 9th, 2007 @ 10:25 pm EDT

Jason: Unfortunately I do not. I’ve only ever seen him once, but he was just wandering around the first place I looked, so I didn’t get a feel for a spawn time at all.

Well thanks anyway and keep up the good work with petopia.
