Petopia: Special Pets, Better Results

I spent some more time yesterday and today tweaking Petopia in response to feedback. Let me say it again — thank you to everyone who has sent me their impressions of the changes. It really helps me figure out where I went wrong and what needs to be dealt with first. *grin* But here’s a quick rundown of the work from yesterday and today.

  • I added another shortcut to the front page to search for pets that know a particular skill. Like the shortcuts for searching by level and zone, this shortcut feeds into the main database so you can refine your search from there as you like.
  • I fixed up the database search results to be more useful. You can now sort the results by clicking on the column headings (like Family, or Level); you can click on the data in the results to go directly to the family or skin page for that results; and you can click on the zone in the results to find other pets in that zone. I want to hook up skills here also, so that you can click on, say, Claw 3, and go to the skills page at the entry for Claw 3, but I’m going to have to restructure the database a bit to make that work so it will be a while longer.
  • All the family pages, skin pages, and mob pages now have a link to the family comparisons. Click on ‘Learnable Skills‘ on any family, mob or skin page and you’ll be taken to the table that shows what families can learn what skills; click on ‘Diet‘ and you’ll be taken to the table that shows what each family will eat; click on ‘Best Stat‘ and you’ll be taken to the table that shows the exact stat modifiers for each family.
  • And finally (for tonight at least), I added a new entry in the navigation menu called ‘Special Pets‘. Right now this section of the site has two pages: one that lists all the Rare Pets and one that lists all the Spawned Pets. (Spawned pets include both quest-spawned pets and the Ghost Saber, who doesn’t actually require a quest to spawn.) I’m working on a list of pets with unique or semi-unique skins, and when I finally finish polishing up the old popular pets page that I keep promising is almost done, that will go here also.

Speaking of which, it looks like a number of the rare elites made it into my data as either rares or elites but not both. I’ll be double-checking them as I have time, but if you see any that are obviously missing please let me know!

  1. Well, there’s a little typo on the “Rare pets” page where you said “making” twice in a row. Just to be a nit-pick ;)

  2. A couple rares that are missing:

Shanda the Spinner — level 19 spider from Loch Modan (who might also have caster stats, can’t remember)
Mazzranache! How did you forget the pink flamingo?!?

  3. Okay! I fixed the typo (and thanks for nit-picking, Maahl — if you didn’t mention it I’d probably never notice it) and added rare flags to a bunch of pets. (Thanks for the list, Corbenn.)

I also did what I should have done yesterday and compared my list to the list on Allakhazam. *grin* I picked up Gretheer that way, who had somehow never been added to Petopia’s data even though I knew about him … (Although note that his mob page won’t be up for a bit until I get in generated. I knew I forgot something.)

Corbenn: I never think of Mazz as rare since I think of her as a quest target. She’s not, of course — she just happens to have a quest named after her. Also, everything I can find on Deathskitter indicates that he’s elite, but not rare. So I’ve left him our for now.

Edit: That took too long, but Gretheer now has a proper page.

  4. Looks like you’re right about Deathskitter. I guess I haven’t actually seen him that often, but he’s got a pretty wide patrol range so that could explain it.

  5. “a list of pets with unique or semi-unique skins”

This will probably be the most popular page on the whole site. (I know it will be mine.)
