"Do you know any way to identify what counts as raw meat?"

I have not found an answer to this yet but on <a HREF="http://www.thottbot.com/?pet=all" rel="nofollow">this thotbot</a> page it says dragonhawks, netherrays, ravagers, and serpents eat raw meat and warpstalkers, turtles, serpents, and dragonhawks eat raw fish.

I tamed a dragonhawk and a ravager and they both ate the partially digested meat like the serpent. I am not high enough to tame a netherray.

I would normally say meats that drop right off a mob and do not supply health from eating such as lion meat and turtle meat would be raw but I have fed many families of pets from these drops. I am still looking for a listing of what is the meaning of raw fish and meat.

In my experience that's more likely to be lazy data work by a designer, but I won't quibble. :>

Thanks for trying raptors and spiders also, Jayla. Do you know any way to identify what counts as raw meat?

The serpents probably eat it because they were added in at the same time as the change in pet-food classifications (from just "Meat" to "Meat, Raw Meat.") As such, carrion birds, wolves, spiders, etc. do not technically eat "raw meat" because it is a category that did not exist before the 2.0 patch (if I recall correctly) and the category was simply never added into their "accepted food" coding.

Thus... lazy Blizzard coding, at work.

Well shoot! That just blows my whole table. Heh.

Thanks for bringing that up, Jayla, and thanks even more for taking the time to verify it.

I just tried it. I took my wolf into WC and it wouldnt eat the partially digested meat (which is in fact greyed out) but my newly tamed serpent will eat it. I have screenshots to verify wolf and carrion birds do not eat this raw meat but the serpent will. I dont see why they would make this kind of distinction when all those animals will eat raw meat in the wild.

It was grey a few months ago when we tried this. I was 19 and my hubby was about 24 and we were both getting snakes. I only had 4-5 pieces of meat (my only food) and he had a turtle before hand and only had fruit on him. Yeah this was a spur of the moment thing. We were freaking out because between deaths and how long it was taking us to find the snakes we were worried we wouldnt have anything to feed them. When we fed it the partially digested meat we didnt know if it was going to work at all because it was greyed but thankfully it did work. Ill try it out tonight and see if the snakes will still eat it.

That's a good question. So far as I can tell, Meat and Raw Meat (and Fish and Raw Fish) are identical in terms of what the pets will actually eat. But I haven't done an exhaustive study on the matter. *grin* And it looks like <a href="http://www.thottbot.com/i3181" rel="nofollow">Partially Digested Meat</a> is now a grey item and not classed as a food at all. Did that change recently?

There is one thing I noticed on your family comparison page. You have it labeled Fish, Raw Fish and Meat, Raw Meat. On one of my hunters I went to WC to tame a serpent (snake, not wind serpent) and i was able to feed it the partially digested meat that dropped from the crocs there. Now I have gone back to WC (about 3 months later) to farm green items for enchanting and my carrion bird will not eat the partially digested meat.

Has this type of meat changed from being an edible meat to an inedible one or do carrion birds not really eat raw meat (which does not make sense because they are scavengers)?
