The Grand Character Plan: Blood Elves
I have a Grand Plan to level a character with each pet family to get a solid feel for how each family plays. I’ve already talked about the families that I plan to level with Taurens and Trolls & Orcs, and today we’re going to talk about my plans for Blood Elves.
Carrion Bird: Blood Elves and carrion birds just seem to go together. What other race lives so obviously off the corpse of their former glory? Well, perhaps Undead — but unfortunately Undead can’t be hunters. Actually, Blood Elves start off friendly to Undead (while the other two Horde races do not), so a Blood Elf leveling in Undead lands is as close as you can get to an Undead hunter.
But regardless of where I level (I haven’t created this character yet), I plan to start with a Taloned Swoop from Mulgore, pick up Vultros the rare blue birdĀ from Westfall, and eventually (much later) aim for the most gorgeous carrion bird in the game: Trachela, the two-headed white vixen of the Bones Wastes in Terrokar Forest. (Unfortunately, her brilliant green mate Torgos can’t be tamed.)
Ravager: A ravager is a classic pet for a Blood Elf, much as a dragonhawk is a classic pet for a Draenei. So of course I will have a Blood Elf character cross the great divide to Azuremyst Island and tame a Ravager Specimen at level 10. She’ll have to return to Bloodmyst Isle after level 17 for a green Enraged Ravager, the only other ravager available before the Outlands. But once she reaches level 60 the sky is the limit — there are seven uniquely-skinned ravagers to be tamed there. I’m particularly partial to the color-changing Rip-Blade Ravager.
Spider: My final Blood Elf character will be accompanied by spiders. Perhaps you can make out the trend here — Blood Elves have creepy, death-related pets. *grin* Unfortunately spiders don’t have any interesting family skills yet, so this character will probably wait in the wings for a bit. But when she’s ready, she’ll start by taming a Vicious Night Web spider from Tirisfal Glades. In addition to being a lovely black widow, this spider also innately knows Bite, Rank 2. At level 19 she’ll make the long journey to Bloodmyst Isle in the Draenei lands for another red and black spider: Zarakh! Zarakh is the only spider with this particular look. And to complete the red theme, this character will tame Naraxis, a rare spider inĀ Duskwood, at level 27 — assuming I can find him. I’ve had trouble hunting down Naraxis before.

hey mania, can u explain y ur doin this with all the hunter races? i really dont understand whats the point.
Do you mean what’s the point of writing up my notes on this project? That one’s easy: I was hoping to spark some conversation about my choices and, incidentally, fill the gaping maw that is this blog’s need for content. *grin*
Or do you mean why would I bother leveling a hunter for each pet family? That one’s harder to answer. On the one hand, there is a limited amount that I can learn from this project: given that I don’t group I’m only going to learn about leveling (and not instances or raiding). And really I’m not going to learn any more this way than I would from leveling each family for a few levels anyway, so there are easier ways to learn what little there is for me to learn.
But on the other hand, I need projects. *grin* My main is stalled at 70 with nothing I am really looking forward to, I burned out on my level-up-a-tailoring-and-bank-mule project when the cost of cloth got too high for her meager earning abilities, and I’m just not enthused about leveling some other class. Pets are what do it for me in WoW, I’m afraid. So this gives me some sort of structure to enrich my playing. (And I’ve learned that it’s hard to keep excited about Petopia unless I am playing.)
In that way, it’s not much different from my first project of tame-every-pet-in-the-game.
I had a carrion bird for the looks on my blood elf huntress, but switched later to a red wind serpent from Feralas. Very flashy pet (lightning breath), good damage, sturdy enough, and looks really sweet together with a female blood elf :)
There are two major types of wind serpents: The “classical” look from the regions of Azeroth, and the new one from the Outlands. Both look good.
For me blood elves are vain, arrogant and manipulative…. I love it!…and I think that their pets should personify that (being so vain and all)
1. For me wind serpents are a great choice (nods at nobbie). They are beautiful, slippery and vicious with a lil magic to boot.
2. Spiders are defiantly a shoe in. Despite their lack of skills (hopefully this will change some time down the track) they are deadly, elegant in a creepy way, and treacherous.
3. Any type of bird (peacock would suit best if you could tame them!) The prettier the better Owls,Carrions,Dragonhawks,Striders. It’s all to do with how much better it make you look..!

Since they can now learn ‘dash’, (red) raptors are in as blood elf pets, too, methinks :)
I like the plan. :) My BE hunter seems to take great enjoyment from taming pets from Alliance lands – first the Ghost Saber, next I think a Ravager Specimen – which is going to be annoying, as I’m level 25 now, but dammit, I don’t want to wait until 60ish for a Ravager. I think I might train up a Mangeclaw or Bjarn, as well.
I need like, five or six stable slots – I want to steal owls and moonstalkers, as well. :)
I know how you feel. :>
Haha, I actually leveled a night elf hunter to 70 and mailed my gear on my dwarf to her, just to have three extra stable slots. I have them mail their gear back and forth between eachother, they share gold, ETC.

And his two friends, a gorilla and a Crab are happy to have a place to stay.
Shame my favorite model in the entire game is a caster.
On the enraged ravagers – the pets level up reasonably quickly, Arcadia. My troll switched to an enraged ravager he had stabled at level 22, and at player level 24 the pet level is already at 23.
Mania, I tried a trick I found from a poster on Thottbot to tame these guys that lets you get one at level 16. If you do the first 2 parts of a level-8-ish quest chain in Brill from the apothecary, you get a reward of “slumber sand”, which will put an enraged ravager (or any other monster below level 30) to sleep for 20 seconds. I tamed mine without a freezing trap this way; the ravager was immobilized for the entire tame spell. This was quite gratifying after failing to tame one using a myriad of other not-so-useful tips at level 16.
Suisaidhna: That’s a really interesting way to do that! Are you getting a nether ray mount to go with your pet?
Alan: That’s an excellent tip! Thanks for sharing. I’ll see if I can get that added to the notes on the Enraged Ravager.
Oops – Arcadia, nevermind about the quick leveling. I didn’t notice you had your sights on the level-10 ravager specimens rather than the level-17 enraged ravagers.
Mania – I hope the tip helps others. The quest is called “A New Plague” and is from Apothecary Johaan in Brill. I went back to Bloodmyst for the 3rd time at level 20 with the sleep sand and my brand-new freezing traps, hoping one or the other would work. There seems to be a very short cooldown on their tame-interrupting move and I was not at all confident in my ability to do something clever for the 10 seconds before and/or after they were frozen. On my previous trip I’d had the Really Sticky Glue from the “A Solvent Spirit” quest that kept the ravager trapped for 10 seconds, but gave up on that approach after a few tries in which the ravager knocked me down as soon as the glue wore off. Combining the glue with a freezing trap ought to have worked, but I don’t think I could manage it with just one or the other and had used up the glue. So it was SUCH a relief to have the slumber sand work like a charm!
I recently started a BElf hunter and decided she’ll head off to Dun Morogh when she hits 10 to get herself a white cat. Why? I guess two reasons: one is the idea of a trek to get a pet, which you seem fond of yourself. The other is that I want to break the colour scheme. Too much red and orange in that place. =)
Then again, I have considered getting her Zarakh when she’s old enough…
