My MMO List
It’s a good week for random lists, what with the holiday and all. And since I just had to re-install all of the MMO games that I play (which took many, many, many hours, let me tell you), I figured I would list them here for your amusement and edification.
- World of Warcraft (of course!)
- Asheron’s Call: Still the best game on the market after WoW, to my way of thinking. AC1 enjoys many of the features of WoW, including a very solo-friendly experience and relatively low system requirements. But it has a feel all its own. Nothing compares to the sensation you get when you enter an Olthoi dungeon – the hot purple darkness filled with the quiet chittering of hundreds of Olthoi; the moment when they notice your presence and all turn and run at you, an angry black tide of acid-dripping mandibles; the sheer joy of laying waste, killing Olthoi after Olthoi in a seemingly endless influx of terrifying insects. And then looting all the corpses, of course. *grin*
- EverQuest II: EQII fixed many of the things I hated about EQI. It supports a wide enough range of gameplay that both my husband and I can play (albeit not together — he’s an inveterate group healer). My biggest complaint is that my favorite class, the conjuror, is mostly stuck with ugly pets.
- Lord of the Rings Online: This MMO reminds me a lot of EQII. It has the same mix of fun and frustrating gameplay. I haven’t gotten very far in LOTRO yet, but I am plugging along. I have a raven who mostly doesn’t do much.
- Dungeons and Dragons Online: On my own I very strongly prefer to solo, which makes DDO a somewhat uncomfortable match for me. But I have friends who play, and occasionally I wil join them.
- Guild Wars: I don’t play this game so much as sometimes drop in and watch people talk. But hey, it’s free!
- Dungeon Runners: Another free offering from NCSoft! It’s essentially Diablo II online, with an optional cheap subscription that gets you access to better loot. I’m not entirely satisfied with the business model, but the gameplay is fun even without the subscription.
I also installed Second Life, but that was a business thing — I don’t intend to ‘play’ it. And I will need to install City of Heroes/City of Villains next time I have a hankering to play, but since I don’t have an active account right now I didn’t bother yet. Finally, I need to install Star Wars Galaxies again so I can check out the creature taming stuff they re-added to the game and see how it differs from WoW’s hunter class taming.
I’m always curious how many WoW players play other things as well. So what have you got on your hard drive?

Wow, that’s a lot of monthly fees!
I cheat as much as I can. :> I use the WoW credit card (that earns 1% of charges towards free gametime) for all the bills that I normally pay with the debit card (and then I auto-pay the credit card bill so I don’t have finance charges). I bought a lifetime account for LOTRO back when I had a high-paying job, so that’s taken care of. Dungeon Runners and Guild Wars are free, of course. And for various reasons I currently have free accounts for the others.
Wow, you sound like you’re keeping yourself busy. WoW is actually the MMORPG I’m playing that’s free. Nab yourself an ex-boyfriend who works at Blizzard and 30 free years of playing ahoy!
No Dark Age of Camelot, huh? Guess that one’s glory days are over. I liked it just cuz there were so many pet classes, but admittedly, I like WoW a lot better.
I played DAoC to level 11 when it first came out. I’ve played most of the big commercial game for at least a few days (except for MxO, which I never got aroun to). But as I’ve mentioned, I don’t like to group at all, so my options in DAoC and EQI were pretty limited. Until WoW launched, in fact, AC1 was the only game that let me solo and have fun at the same time. *grin*
… and … I have to admit that I was a little put off by DAoC itself, because at level 11 I was supposed to be killing these adorable little lizards that looked significantly like my pet monitor lizards.
Mostly WoW. Occasionally I play some other games, such as Caesar IV and Knights of Honor. I decided against playing any more MMO’s for two reasons, or maybe three… My girlfriend doesn’t enjoy playing this kind of game and thinks I spend too much time playing WoW/games already. The expense, although I can probably afford it. The lack of time, I’m running too many different WoW characters already, so adding toons for different games would make that even more scattered.
Oh, and, like you, I am a solo-player. *wink*
